Cal U's 185th Commencement Celebration

Watch the December 2017 Commencement ceremonies LIVE. Visit our media site about 10 minutes before each ceremony begins. 


Mr. Jack Zduriencik, Class of 1974, will address graduates when Cal U marks its 185th Commencement. Two ceremonies are planned:

  • Graduate ceremony (awarding master's degrees): 7 p.m. December 15 in the Convocation Center. Master’s degree candidates will be vested in their academic hoods during the ceremony. WATCH LIVE.
  • Undergraduate ceremony(awarding of bachelor and associate degrees): 10 a.m. December 16 in the Convocation Center. WATCH LIVE.

Commencement ceremonies are held two times per year, in May and December. August 2017 graduates are invited to attend the December 2017 commencement ceremonies. January 2018 graduates will be invited to attend the May 2018 commencement ceremonies. 

REMINDER: All Prospective December 2017 Graduates

Graduation is not automatic; students must apply the semester they are intending to graduate. Graduation information and details will be sent ONLY to students who have applied by the posted deadline. 

  • December 2017 Deadline: Applications are due by Friday, September 22, 2017 (online through VIP).

  • Undergraduate ceremony(awarding of bachelor and associate degrees): Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the Convocation Center.

To All August Graduates and December Candidates:

Are you ready for commencement next weekend? With less than two weeks left, we are working hard on last minute details to ensure a memorable event for all involved. Even if you aren’t planning to attend commencement, please review the checklist below to make sure you are on track as we near the end of the semester.

If you have not taken care of the items listed, please be sure to do so ASAP.

Purchase proper regalia (cap and gown) from the University bookstore.

RSVP (whether attending or not attending) for the President’s Dinner for Graduates by Dec. 7, if you have not done so already. (Evite and RSVP details are included below.)

Return parking permit (if applicable).

Did or will your address change??? If so, please complete the Student Information Change Form and submit to Academic Records ASAP. Please ensure your address is correct for mailing of your diploma and other official University documents.

Clear up all outstanding student accounts (e.g., financial aid, health insurance, bursar, and library).

Meet with your Career Coach through the Career & Professional Development Center (CPDC). Don’t miss out on possible job opportunities! Your resume will be reviewed and approved for posting online by a CPDC staff member so that it is ready to be referred to hiring employers. Simply contact the CPDC at 724-938-4413 or careers@calu.edu, and visit Natali Suite 138 in person or online at www.calu.edu/careers.

Consider giving to the 2017 Senior Class Gift Drive (earn special privileges and receive a red “2017” tassel). Make your gift online by visiting: https://www.calu.edu/giving/give-online/class-gift-drive/index.jsp . Gifts are also being collected at the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations located on the 2nd Floor of the Kara Alumni House, or by visiting the Class of 2017 Gift Drive table before and after the President’s Dinner for Graduates/Commencement Rehearsal on Thursday, Dec. 14. Please make all checks payable to the “Foundation for California University of Pennsylvania.”

If you are attending the ceremony, please look for emails next week with final details and instructions, including seat assignments and line-up locations. Emails will be sent from this account and from your dean’s office. A reminder that NO TICKETS are issued for commencement.

President’s Dinner – RSVPs are due this Thursday (Dec. 7). 

IF HAVE NOT SUBMITTED YOUR RSVP, PLEASE DO SO EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT ATTENDING. The President’s Dinner for Graduates is open to graduating students only and the commencement rehearsal will be held immediately following the dinner (approximately 7 p.m.).

Attending the dinner and/or rehearsal is not mandatory, although we encourage your participation at the commencement rehearsal if possible.

Hello, August 2017 Graduates and December 2017 Candidates!

If you are able to join us, we hope you are making the necessary arrangements to attend commencement next month such as purchasing your cap and gown and passing along event details to your family.

Please review the following important information for students and guests who are planning to attend our commencement ceremonies.

Graduate Commencement: Friday, December 15, 2017 at 7 p.m.

    • Convocation Center doors open to guests at 5:30 p.m.
    • Guests should be seated no later than 6:45 p.m.
    • Each commencement ceremony can vary in length based on the number of graduates. We ask that you allow approximately 1½ (1.5) hours for the graduate ceremony.

Undergraduate Commencement: Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 10 a.m.

    • Convocation Center doors open to guests at 8 a.m.
    • Guests should be seated no later than 9:15 a.m.
    • Each commencement ceremony can vary in length based on the number of graduates. We ask that you allow approximately 2½ (2.5) hours for the undergraduate ceremony.

PRESIDENT’S DINNER AND COMMENCEMENT REHEARSAL

The President’s Dinner for Graduates will be held on December 14 at 6 p.m. in Gallagher Hall immediately followed by a rehearsal at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center. These events are not mandatory although we encourage students to attend if schedules permit. We understand that travel, work and family obligations will prohibit many students from attending the December 14 activities so we will pass along any important details to students not able to join us for the rehearsal.

During the week of November 13, all graduating students will receive a digital invitation to attend the President’s Dinner for Graduates. Please be aware that guests are not permitted. The invitation will include online RSVP instructions. Please register your RSVP by Dec. 7, even if you are not planning to attend the dinner

TICKETS
Tickets are NOT issued/required to attend our commencement ceremonies. All families and friends are welcome to attend our ceremonies. Seating is offered on a first come, first served basis.

PHOTOS
Our professional photographer (GradImages®) will be taking photos of all graduates as they enter and exit the stage. After commencement, GradImages will email students with details on how to proof their ceremony photos online along with ordering information. Members of the Cal U marketing staff will also be taking photographs of students and guests for general marketing purposes before, during, and after the ceremonies.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

There are a substantial number of steps and there is considerable amount of walking for access to the President's Dinner and for the commencement processional. Alternate access arrangements for these events and/or all other student access requests should be made to the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) by Friday, December 1, 2017. Contact OSD in person (Carter Hall - G35) or by phone, (724) 938-5781.

GUESTS WITH DISABILITIES

Our guests are offered parking and seating in order of arrival. Accommodations are not reserved. University staff will be available at the commencement ceremonies to direct guests to the available, designated seating areas.

    • Handicapped Parking: Guests with handicapped parking placards should request further direction from a uniformed officer to the designated area.
    • Seating: Handicapped seating locations for wheelchairs and companion seating is available on the second floor railing area, accessible by elevator.
    • Interpreter: An interpreter is scheduled to be at the ceremony. 

TRAVEL INFORMATION

The closet major airport to Cal U is Pittsburgh International, which is about a 45-minute drive from campus. We do not have a shuttle to/from the airport so you would need to rent a car or arrange for your own ground transportation.

Caps, Tassels, & Gowns...Oh My!

Email sent on 10/23/17 to December 2017 candidates and August 2017 graduates. 

Not able to make the Graduation Fair On October 23? Don’t worry. You have up until commencement to purchase your regalia, however, we recommend that all students purchase their caps and gowns no later than Friday, November 17, 2017 before sizes are limited and it is too late to place special orders. 

For students not able to purchase regalia in person (i.e., global online students and students involved in internships and student teaching), please contact the Bookstore at 724-938-5575. You will be able to place an order over the phone and make arrangements to have your regalia picked-up prior to the ceremony or mailed to you.

We hope that you will be able to attend the Graduation Fair on Monday, October 23, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the University Bookstore. You can also visit our vendors online anytime for your commencement needs and beyond!

Undergraduate Commencement Honors Determination Emails:

Emails were sent the week of 10/16/17 to December 2017 undergraduate students who qualify for honors cords and to August 2017 undergraduate graduates who have earned academic honors. An email was also sent to undergraduate students who will not qualify based on resident credit hour issues. Students are advised to please check their Cal U email accounts for possible honors determinations and to refer to our academic honors policy. The Bookstore will have a listing of qualifying students and will distribute honors cords beginning on the date of the Graduation Fair through commencement day.
