Office of Academic Success

Find the help you need to succeed and graduate in four years.

The Office of Academic Success, in Noss Hall, welcomes students at every stage of their Cal U experience. Whether you are a new freshman or transfer student, an upper-class student or a soon-to-be graduate, we are here to assist you.

Our office is open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, and you are always welcome to stop by - even if you're not sure exactly what kind of help you need.

The Office of Academic Success can assist you with:

  • Registering for classes. Cal U students register for classes well in advance. Registering on your assigned day gives you the best possible chance of getting the classes you need. Learn what to do before you register and see a step-by-step guide to the registration process.
  • Placement testing. The Office of Academic Success builds schedules for incoming students. We also coordinate placement testing to ensure that freshmen and new transfer students are assigned to the proper math and/or English courses, including developmental courses if needed.
  • Finding your place at Cal U. A Peer Mentor can help you get comfortable with life at Cal U. Your First-Year Seminar course offers a wealth of information and teaches skills every college student needs. Learning Communities connect you with other students in your major, and Starfish links you to campus resources.
  • Prior Learning Assessment, CLEP and DSST exams. Through Prior Learning Assessment, credit may be awarded for qualifying life experiences such as work or military training, volunteer work or independent certifications. CLEP and DSST exams let you demonstrate college-level achievement equivalency to specific undergraduate courses.
  • Graduating on time with the Four-Year Graduation Plan.
  • Explore different studies. If you are an undecided major, take courses in exploratory studies while you figure out your path at Cal U. Complete this worksheet and return it to the Office of Student Success.

Make the grades. Find the academic support you need.

College courses can be challenging! You'll find academic support at:

  • The Success Center. Walk-ins are welcome in this center, where graduate assistants are on hand to help with study skills, time management, test anxiety and more. The Support for Success, Academic Healthy U and PASS programs are housed here, too.

Tough problem? Call on the academic ombudsperson.

If you have an academic problem you can't resolve, visit the Office of Academic Success. The academic ombudsperson can help you address unresolved problems involving academic processes, procedures and people.

The program encourages students to begin by dealing with academic concerns through established means. The ombudsperson monitors the situation and becomes involved directly if established means do not resolve the issue(s).
