Grants and Funding

The Center for Undergraduate Research supports various aspects of student efforts in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activities. PennWest California undergraduates are encouraged to apply for funds in any of the categories identified below. Students should also consult their college and departmental websites, and ask department faculty and staff about other possible sources to support undergraduate research endeavors.

Student Research Funds

The Center for Undergraduate Research is pleased to be able to provide funds to support student research projects. This is possible through an innovative model adopted by University President Geraldine M. Jones. Under this new model, 48% of the indirect monies from externally funded PennWest California grants are collected and then invested in various programs, including funding of student research.

Student Research Funds Application Materials

Applications for up to $2,000 in funding for projects will be accepted on a rolling basis during the FALL and SPRING terms each academic year. Please carefully consult all application material below:

Student Travel Funds

Students may apply for funds to support travel related to presenting results of their research activities. Application for travel support must be made at least 4-6 weeks in advance of anticipated travel. Support is limited to domestic travel only. Application for travel support is competitive and applications will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis as long as travel funds are available. Cost sharing of travel expenses is favored though not required. Suggested sources of cost sharing are departmental funds, college funds (through your dean), University funds (through the provost), and personal funds (out of pocket contributions to travel that will not be reimbursed).

Before making application for funding, please read the Student Travel Fund Policy.

Individuals seeking support should complete and submit the Individual Individual Student Travel Fund Application.

Groups of two or more students seeking support for same conference or event should complete and submit the Group Student Travel Fund Application.

If travel funding is approved, students will complete both a Project Summary Form and Student Travel Fund Reimbursement Form within 15 days upon their return from the travel.

Jesse B. Guttman Student Research Grant Program

The Guttman Research Grant Program rewards young scholars who are actively pursuing new avenues of academic achievement within their specific disciplines of study. This program was established to honor the late Jesse B. Guttman who along with his brothers, Leo and Howard, founded the Guttman Oil Company, Guttman Reality, and Mon River Towing. These companies, now under the umbrella of the Guttman Group, employ numerous individuals in the Mon Valley.
