Student Musicians Show Holiday Spirit

Young and Gifted Gospel Choir

Cal U's talented singers and musicians are featured in these pre-holiday events sponsored by the Department of Music and Theatre.

Unless otherwise noted, these performances are free and open to the public, as well as to the campus community.

On-Campus Performances

Nov. 21 - Cal U Jazz Ensemble, annual fall concert; 8 p.m. in the Performance Center, inside the Natali Student Center.

Under the direction of Dr. Frank Stetar, director of University bands, the Jazz Ensemble performs a variety of traditional holiday tunes and an assortment of jazz melodies.

Dec. 2 - Young and Gifted Gospel Choir, annual holiday concert, 5 p.m. in Old Main Chapel.

Directed by assistant professor Dr. Randy Tillmutt, the performance includes African folk songs and a selection of holiday favorites.

Off-Campus Performances

Dec. 2-3 - Cal U Choir joins the Washington Symphony Orchestra for "Ho Ho Ho with the WSO," 8 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3 p.m. Dec. 3 at Trinity High School auditorium, 231 Park Ave., Washington, Pa. 

The choir performs Craig Courtney's "A Musicological Journey Through the Twelve Days of Christmas," John Rutters' "Angels' Carol," Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival," and "Hallelujah" from Handel's Messiah.

In addition, Cal U commercial music technology majors Kate Snyder, Meghan McPherson and Nick Linder perform solos with the orchestra for Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Dreams of Fireflies."

Choir director Dr. Yugo Ikach, co-chair of the Department of Music and Theatre, is the WSO's music director and principal conductor, and Cal U students are admitted to WSO performances free of charge with a valid CalCard.

Dec. 9 - California Singers vocal ensemble joins the "Christmaspalooza" celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Washington Crown Center mall.

Advance tickets for "Ho, Ho, Ho with the WSO" are available at Citizens Library and Peters Township Public Library; tickets also are available at the door. Cal U students with a valid CalCard are admitted free of charge to WSO concerts.
