Admission is free, and free parking will be available in Lot 2, which is located near the library’s front entrance.
Visitors will learn about Cal U’s and the Mon Valley's contributions to the war effort. The exhibition, from the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., highlights development of the jeep, a uniquely American invention produced by the American Bantam Car Co. in Butler, Pa., as well as the stories behind Rosie the Riveter and local Tuskegee Airmen.
Local historical societies also contributed artifacts, and members will be on the third floor of the library to discuss the exhibition and their society’s collections.
“We absolutely would not have been able to put together our World War II exhibit without the assistance of our local history society partners,” said William Meloy, research and electronic collections librarian at Cal U.
“They shared their collections, expertise, and the many incredible stories of how the war impacted their towns — and especially how their citizens contributed to the war effort, at home and abroad.”
Cal U’s community partners include Donora Historical Society, Brownsville Historical Society, California Area Historical Society, Greater Monessen Historical Society, Fayette County Historical Society, the Coal and Coke Heritage Center, and Penn State Fayette.
Cal U will host military veterans for a Welcome Home Breakfast before a special showing of the We Can Do It: WWII exhibition in Manderino Library.
Seating is limited at the breakfast, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 23 in the Kara Alumni House, on California’s campus. Admission is free; the breakfast is open only to those who have served in any branch of the U.S. armed services.
Tickets are required. Veterans should call 724-938-4076 or email email@example.com to inquire.
