Continuing Education in Counseling

Sessions, which are approved for continuing education credits, are open to Cal U faculty, staff and students as well as members of the community.

The Department of Counselor Education and the Master of Social Work program are offering a free professional development opportunity for counselors, psychologists and social workers.

Ethics and Sex additions Training will be held from 9  a.m.-3 p.m. April 6 in the south wing of the Convocation Center at Cal U. Lunch will be provided. 

The conference is approved for continuing education units (CEUs) by the National Board for Certified Counselors Inc.
Cal U students, faculty and staff, as well as community members, also may attend the conference, which is funded through a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The session will addess these topics:

• Ethics N'at: Licensed professional counselor Dr. John D. Massella, director of Cal U's Office for Students with Disabilities, discusses how ethical decisions are made within counseling and social work settings. He also looks at a number of ethical decision-making models and discusses challenges faced by clinicians who practice in rural areas.

• Understanding, Assessing and Treating Sex Addiction Within a Highly Sexualized, Image-Based Culture: David Janvier, a licensed professional counselor, certified sex therapist and Gestalt Pastoral Care Minister, describes the neuroscience of falling in love (or lust), a therapeutic approach model for treating sex addiction, and challenges facing clients in rural or medically underserved regions.

A previous training session, held March 22, focused on women's health issues in behavioral health.

Both conferences are co-sponsored by Cal U's Master of Social Work program, designated as a pre-approved provider of professional continuing education for licensed social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.
