Cal U seeks items to help students at California Elementary.

The Student Government Association, with assistance from the Center for Volunteer Programs and Service Learning, is hosting a winter accessory and food drive through Dec. 3.

Items being collected include hats, scarves, gloves, warm socks, toaster pastries, and microwavable macaroni and cheese cups.

“It’s a campus and community donation drive,” said Diane Hasbrouck, director of the CVPSL.

All donations benefit the Good Eats Program, a weekend feeding program for children at California Elementary School. Good Eats is run by the CVPSL and California United Methodist Church.

All clothing will be given to California Elementary to be distributed to those youngsters most in need. All donated food goes to the Good Eats program, which runs every week, including holidays, from September through May.

Boxes for the donations are located in every academic building, all of the residence halls as well as Gallagher, Hamer and Herron halls.

This drive replaces the previous Toys for Tots "Stuff A Bus" initiative.

“That’s a great program, but the students really wanted to make the shift and start impacting and changing things in their own area,” Hasbrouck said.

The warm clothing and food drive ends the day after California Holly Day and a holiday craft fair — two other partnerships between the University and community — take place in the Natali Student Center on Dec. 2.

“That’s a great opportunity for community members to donate,” Hasbrouck added.

“Cal U students are so passionate about helping others, and now everything that’s being done stays right here.”
