Two members of Cal U’s Bass Fishing Club will join teams from around the country for the 2019 YETI Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) College National Championship Tournament, which will take place June 4-6, on the Potomac River in Marbury, Md.

Seniors and club co-founders Nick Fulks and David Blaker qualified for the national event last summer when they finished in 10th place among more than 110 teams at a tournament on Mountain Lake in Bedford, Va.

YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five regional conferences; Cal U, whose club began in October 2017, competes in the Northern Conference, which includes fishing duos from Division I schools such as Ohio State, Michigan State, and Penn State.

The top 10 teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open advanced to the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

Both anglers are fisheries and wildlife biology majors and are looking forward to casting their line in the fourth largest river along the Atlantic coast of the United States and the 21st largest in the United States.

“It’s a very historic and challenging river,” said Fulks, the club president. “We are very excited to compete in such a special event and hope to represent our club and the school the best we can.”

Both anglers on the winning team qualify for the FLW Cup this August on Lake Hamilton, Hot Springs, Ariz. They also share a Ranger Z175 with a 115-hp outboard as well as the title of national champion.
