For one summer afternoon, a corner of Cal U’s quad became a film set.

Through the auspices of the Pittsburgh Film Office, a production team from a premium cable channel visited campus June 4 to film a scene for an upcoming television series set in a fictional Rust Belt town.

Cal U played the role of a Midwestern university that appears briefly in the series. To set the scene, a props crew replaced our Cal U banners and erected a temporary sign identifying the fictional school.

Filming also took place in California Borough, a near the Booker Towers at the campus entrance.

The production company is keeping details under wraps as it continues to film the series in a variety of southwestern Pennsylvania locations.

“It’s fun to be part of a project like this, and we’re happy to show off our beautiful campus,” said Becky McMillen, executive director of Conference Services at Cal U.

“I appreciate the Pittsburgh Film Office’s location team for keeping us on its radar.”

This is not Cal U’s first moment in the limelight. In December 2012, the Convocation Center was transformed into a wrestling arena for the feature film Foxcatcher, starring Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell.
