Today in Black History, The New York Renaissance, also known as the “Renaissance Big Five” and “The Rens”, an all-black professional basketball team, was established on February 13, 19231. With the likes of Clarence “Fats” Jenkins, James “Pappy” Ricks and Frank “Strangler” Forbes, ‘The Rens” went on to win the 1924-25 Colored Basketball World Championship2. Jenkins, Ricks and Forbes, along with the 1932-33 Rens team, were inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame in 19633.
