Selena was a Latin recording artist, often referred to as the “queen of Tejano music.” Selena Quintanilla-Perez was born on April 16th, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. Around the age of 10, she started performing with her brother, Abraham, and sister Suzette at local weddings and clubs. Selena learned to sing in Spanish to resonate with the Latino community, but only learned to speak Spanish fluently later.  Selena was recognized at the 1987 Tejano music awards as Best Female Vocalist of the year and Performer of the year. Her 1990 album was the first Tejano record to reach gold status, selling more than 500,000 copies. She won the Grammy award best Mexican-American album for her 1993 album Live. Selena was murdered on March 31, 1995, by Yolanda Saldivar, the founder of her fan club.
