In 1994, LGBT History month was created with the purpose of celebrating gay and lesbian history and advocating for it to be a part of the high school curriculum.[1] Led by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, fellow educators and community members spearheaded the campaign, choosing October because of National Coming Out Day (October 11).[1] Equality forum notes, “LGBT community is the only community worldwide that is not taught its history at home, in public schools or religious institutions.[1] LGBT History Month recognizes the achievements of LGBT trailblazers, like James Baldwin, Harvey Milk, Laverne Cox and Ellen Degeneres, notable role models, with many others whose contributions continue to leave their mark on gay and civil rights.[2]
