Born Richard Raskin in 1934, ophthalmologist and professional tennis player Renee Richards underwent gender reassignment surgery in 1975, after spending all her life feeling like she was “born in the wrong body.”[1] When banned from competing in the women's US Open because of a "women-born-women" rule, Richards challenged the decision, and in 1977, the New York Supreme Court ruled in her favor.[1] Despite being defeated by Virginia Wade in the 1977 US Open, Richards climbed to No. 20 rank in the world in the WTA and went on to coach Martina Navratilova to No. 1 in the world.[1]
