Maria Eva Duarte, known as Eva Peron, was born May 17, 1919, in Los Toldos, Argentina. [1] She first gained recognition as an actress, before attracting the attention and marrying Col. Juan Peron, who would eventually become the President of Argentina. [2] Although Peron never officially held public office, she acted as “de facto minister of health and labour,” moving forward wage increases to union laborers.  She also used her position as First Lady to improve the lives of poor people and to fight for women’s suffrage, forming the Peronista Feminist Party in 1949 [2]. Upon her death in 1952, Peron received a state funeral and was given the title of “Spiritual Leader of the Nation” by the Argentine Congress. [3] She later gained pop culture status when her life story was depicted in the musical, Evita, first on Broadway and then in 1996 film, starring Maddona. [4]
