Edith “Edie” Windsor, computer operating systems pioneer, and most notably, LGBT activist was born June 20, 1929, in Philadelphia, PA. [1] A trailblazer in her professional and personal life, Windsor gained status at IBM by obtaining a competitive IBM Ph.D. scholarship and went on to be the founder of PC Classics, Inc., a software specializing consultant agency. [2] Her activism spanned over 40 years and included many leadership roles in numerous LGBT organizations in New York City. [2] Windsor met the love of her life, Psychologist, Dr. Thea Spyer, in 1963 and, after a 42-year engagement, they wed in Toronto Canada in 2007, prompted by Spyer’s lengthy illness and diagnosis which gave her less than a year to live. [3] After her death, Windsor was named the executor and sole beneficiary of her spouse's estate and was taxed an exorbitant rate because the federal government did not recognize their marriage. [4] From that, United States v. Windsor was born, and it’s (her) 2013 victory became a precedent-setting case that paved the way for marriage equality. [5] Windsor died in September 2017 at the age of 88, but her life, legacy, and love will live in the annals of the LGBT civil rights.
