Today we honor and salute the many LGBTQ organizations that provide support, advocacy and best practices on behalf of LGBTQ individuals.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC) - founded in 1980, the HRC is currently the largest LGTBQ civil rights organization in the nation. [1] Charged with civil rights advocacy and political lobbying, the HRC works tirelessly to protect and expand rights for LGBTQ individuals, including anti-discrimination, hate crimes legislation and most notably, marriage equality. [2]
GLSEN (first known as Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), founded in Boston, Mass. In 1990, focuses on creating safe and inclusive k-12 schools. [3] Through groundbreaking research, GLSEN has developed curriculum and programs to educate and develop policies, at all levels, to impact children and communities. [3]
Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE) is a non-profit organization that dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQA older adults through advocacy and resources. [4] Since its inception in 1978, SAGE has been at the forefront of many of LGBTQ civil rights from HIV/AIDS, transgender rights, LGBT veterans to marriage equality. [5]
PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbian and Gays) is the United States largest organization for families and allies of individuals who identify as LGBTQ . [6] Born out of a mother’s love and support of her son, PFLAG has grown to 400 chapters and over 200,000 supporters across the country. [7]
