“My community sent me here to use my voice and my vote as their neighbor and as a nurse, and I am proud to vote today to protect people with pre-existing health conditions."

On January 3rd of this year, the House of Representatives swore in Lauren Underwood, a 32-year-old registered nurse, making her the youngest black woman in Congress. Underwood started her political career in 2014 under President Obama as a policy professional after earning two master’s degrees from John Hopkins University. Two years later she became senior adviser at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.1 She is among a groundbreaking group of forty-two women all joining congress in 2019. The New York Times said about the new cast of faces in the House, “It is the most racially diverse and most female group of representatives ever elected to the House, whose history spans more than 200 years.”2
