Modern feminist icon and renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon in a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City on July 6th, 1907. Kahlo would suffer from many ailments in her lifetime, starting with Polio at the age of six.  She disguised this affliction that included a thinner and weaker right Polio left her right leg much smaller and weaker than the left by wearing long skirts every day. Kahlo’s artistic depicted her experiences growing up during the Mexican Revolution and witnessing gun violence. As Kahlo continued her painting career, she became acquainted with Diego Rivera, a famous muralist recognized globally for his beautiful portrayal of Mexico and its people. Rivera fiercely encouraged Kahlo’s work, and they fell in love quickly and the two married in 1929. Kahlo enjoyed much success, completing over 144 paintings and 55 self-portraits. One of her most famous self-portraits, ‘The Two Fridas’ (1939), is a painting depicting “two versions of the artist sitting side-by-side” with both hearts exposed. This portrait is said to represent “unloved” and “loved” versions of Kahlo.” Kahlo died on July 13, 1954, in her childhood home at the age of 47.
