Sarah Brady was an American gun control activist and wife to James Brady, the former press secretary to then-President Ronald Reagan.  Brady’s activism began in 1985, four years after her husband sustained brain damage and partial paralysis during an assassination attempt on President Reagan. She began her work with Handgun Control Inc, a smaller organization, and aided them to lobby for a bill that would weaken the Gun Control Act of 1968. Brady made television appearances, penned letters, and performed speeches all in support of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention bill, which was signed into law in November 1993 by President Bill Clinton. The Brady Bill required a five-day hold period before the purchase of a gun, as well as background checks from individuals seeking to own a gun. Brady continued advocacy for sensible gun control laws for the rest of her life. She died April 3, 2015, about a year after her husband. In December 2000, the Trustees for Handgun Control and the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence recognized James and Sarah Brady’s dedication to gun control by renaming the two organizations the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
