“You can disagree without being disagreeable.” –Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an active member of the Supreme Court of the United States, a position she earned after a rocky path to the top. She attended some of the most prestigious schools in the country including Cornell, Columbia, and Harvard. Despite excelling, academically, Ginsberg faced a significant amount of gender discrimination during her higher education experience. However, unapologetically, she persevered and became the first woman member of the Harvard Law Review. She also served on the Columbia Law Review and was the first woman to earn tenure at Columbia. Ginsberg successes were marred by balancing the rigors of law school while parenting a young daughter and attending to her husband who was battling testicular cancer. After graduation, she continued to encounter gender discrimination while searching for work, but eventually landed a clerk position U.S. District Judge Edmund L. Palmieri. Ginsberg advocated for gender equality through the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, arguing six major gender equality cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1980 Ginsberg was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia by then-President Jimmy Carter, a position she held for 13 years until her 1993 appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton.  Through the death of her husband in 2010 and personal illness, Ginsberg continues to serve on the High Court, modeling resilience, strength, and grit.
