“They just wanted to be close to the place that made the discovery…We knew we had to work to do, and it was urgent."   - Francoise Barre-Sinoussi

Nobel Prize winner, Francoise Barre-Sinoussi is a French virologist who is best known for co-discovering HIV. After earning a Ph.D. in 1975 at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, she interned at the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) before returning to the Pasteur Institute and continuing her extensive research on viruses, in particular, retroviruses. Barre-Sinoussi has done work in developing countries with the World Health Organization. She opened a laboratory in 1988 and is known for her research, publications, and conference presentations. Currently, Barre-Sinoussi is the Director of the Regulation of Retroviral Infections Division and serves as chair of the International AIDS Society. Barre-Sinoussi efforts and advocacy for communities affected by HIV and AIDS have motivated her to continue her work with other countries devastated by the disease, making her a hero to many and saving the lives of millions.
