“Your journey is not determined by where you begin.” – Jahana Hayes

Jahana Hayes, a former social studies teacher at John F. Kennedy High School, ran and was elected U. S. Representative for Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District, in November 2018. Awarded the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, Hayes sought to change the narrative of public education, advocating for equitable resources and opportunities for all students and families, stating that “it was an investment in future generations.” A lifelong Connecticuter, Hayes is the first African American woman and the first African American Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress. She opted to attempt this first run for public office out of an obligation to speak and stand up for the people in her community. In addition to education, Haye’s focus includes raising the minimum wage, single-payer health care, making it easier for undocumented immigrants to become citizens and increasing resources and support for teachers. She wants to give voice to hard-working people in communities who, in her opinion, “have been left out of the conversation.” Hayes lives in Wolcott, Connecticut with her husband, Detective Milford Hayes and their four children.
