A Woman is a full circle. Within her is the power to crate, nature and transform. – Diane Mariechild

Born out of a 1981 Presidential proclamation for a Women’s History Week, Women’s History has been a national celebration in the United States. Several federal institutions including the Library of Congress, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Park Services, Smithsonian Institution, and United States Holocaust Museum join in the annual commemoration and observance of the significant contributions women have made to American History. The women’s movement of the sixties is said to be the catalyst for the recognition of women’s history. Scholars note that “the movement raised the aspirations as well as the opportunities of women…and produced a number of female historians”1. From artists such as Edmonia Lewis to scientist Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu and legal minds, such as Ruth Bader Ginsberg to musical legends, such as Billie Holiday, we have shared the stories of those who blazed the trail for women today and in the future. We also celebrate and honor the extraordinary women in our everyday lives. Mothers, sisters, aunts, teachers, and all women who lead, live and love- making their world and this world a better place!
