Call for Submissions

Please consider submitting your best essays for this year’s Eleanore C. Hibbs Composition Awards. Essays written for English 101 and English 102 during Spring, Summer, and Fall 2018 should be submitted for consideration to the Cal U Writing Center via email at writingctr@calu.edu or in-person at Noss Hall 110 by noon on Monday, April 8, 2019. Entry forms are available in the Writing Center in Noss 110 or via email request at writingctr@calu.edu.

2019 will mark the thirty-fifth awarding of the Eleanore C. Hibbs Composition Award. Professor Hibbs passed away in 2006, but her legacy is ongoing. Two awards are given each year: one for the best paper from Composition I and one for the best paper from Composition II. Winners will be judged and notified in Spring 2019. Each award winner will receive a $100 award, a certificate, and recognition at the English department luncheon.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. All entries must have been written as class assignments in English 101 or 102 during the academic year for which they are submitted.
  2. Students must have a B or higher grade in the course for which the essay is submitted.
  3. Entries must be submitted by Monday, April 8, 2019.
  4. All essays must follow an accepted MLA, APA, or Chicago style sheet.

Submissions will be judged by the staff of the Cal U Writing Center.

Each student who submits an essay will receive a certificate of participation. If there is a strong pool of applicants, select student essays may get an honorable mention certificate for outstanding work.

Each faculty member whose course is represented in the contest will receive a certificate of sponsorship.
