RE: UTech Security Awareness Bulletin - Phishing Messages
Recently, a flood of phishing messages have been circulating through e-mail. Phishing messages tend to come in a variety of flavors:
-
One version simply read '[Message clipped] View entire message'. Clicking on the hyperlink in the message would likely lead you away from Cal U's site to a malicious site asking you for your username/password.
Once you enter this information, the attacker would then be able to access your calu.edu account! Protect your username/password!
-
Other recent phishing emails claim that someone was sharing a document with you. When you click on that document to open it, it would either attempt to infect your computer with malware OR ask for your username/password.
Once you provide your username/password, the attacker would then be able to access your calu.edu account! Protect your username/password!
-
Yet another phishing attack that we've seen simply attempts to start a dialogue with an end-user. The email appears to come from a supervisor or person that you work with, but it usually has an incorrect email address. Eventually they ask you to buy a gift card and email them the numbers.
Once you provide the numbers, they have effectively stolen the gift card! Do not fall victim to this scam!
Being able to recognize these attacks is a key step in avoiding them. University Technology Services posts up-to-date information on their Twitter Account. Please follow @calupatech to stay up-to-date!
Remember: Protect your username/password! There are unfortunately people out there trying to steal it.
