Born out of the ashes of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, LGBTQ Pride Month is celebrated each June to commemorate the individuals who began the modern-day pride movement and to recognize the impact LGBTQ people have had in the world. At its roots, Pride Month symbolizes a continual call for social and political change, demanding the end of inequality of all kinds. The United States has made great strides in policy reforms, including allowing gay men and lesbians to legally adopt or foster-care children and allowing same-sex couples to marry; there is still more work to do. Currently, there is no federal law barring employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and there are continual debates about whether or not the Fair Housing Act applies to LGBT individuals. So, as we revel in the victories and honor the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, we should consider the best way to honor those who came before us by doing what we must to build on their legacy for all generations to come.
