LGBT History month was founded in 1994 by Rodney Wilson. He believed that there should be a month dedicated to teaching gay and lesbian history and gathered fellow teachers and leaders in his community in Missouri. They selected October since it is in the academic school year and already featured prominent dates, such as National Coming Out Day. “Gay and Lesbian History Month was endorsed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Education Association and other national organizations.” The LGBT community is one of the few communities that does not get taught their history at home, in school, or in religious institutions. LGBT History Month recognizes the vast history of LGBT people by providing role models, building community, and making themselves known. ~K. Melck
