Medical Amnesty is an act that enables protection from liability to those who seek medical attention as a result of an excessive use of alcohol or other substances. This act has been established to help protect college students from serious consequences, such as death, related to excessive use of alcohol and other drugs. During Homecoming week 2019, there are a few things you need to know to keep yourself and others safe from harm.
Did you know Pennsylvania law provides for Medical Amnesty for a person calling for medical help on behalf of another?
If you call for help, you WILL NOT be charged for underage consumption or possession as long as your call was the only way law enforcement found out about the situation, you were the first to call and provided your name and stayed with the individual needing medical help. More importantly, your friend will receive the medical attention he or she needs.
Did you know Student Conduct WILL NOT charge you with an alcohol or drug code of conduct violation if your use is found out because you seek medical help for yourself or another or admit to use when reporting being victimized such as being robbed, assaulted or harassed?
The person you call for will also not be charged. See the "Limited Immunity" section in the student code of conduct for more details (Section IV, Subsection A, Paragraph 5).
In the event that you or someone you know or see needs medical attention, please contact Public Safety at (724) 938-4299, call 911, or take that person to the University Wellness Center, open from 7pm – 7am Saturday/Sunday.
