Welcome to the 2020-2021 academic year at Cal U!

The California University of Pennsylvania Student Code of Conduct remains in effect and covers behavior both on and off campus. Additionally, several provisions in the Code of Conduct can apply to events and gatherings.

While many students are participating in University activities remotely and not returning to the California area, many other students are still choosing to return and live near campus. Safety and security must be the top priorities during these unusual times. Cal U’s Bill of Rights & Responsibilities states that “We have the right to safety and security; We have the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of others.” Following health and safety guidelines currently in place – wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and limiting group sizes – are required components of maintaining safety and security.

You are encouraged to begin this semester by reflecting on the reasons you enrolled at Cal U and your short and long-term goals. Are your personal and social actions supporting responsible safety and security for yourself and others? All students must take the time to consider whether your decisions are supporting or distracting from your academic goals and the reasons you and others are at Cal U.

We want to see all of our community members, near and far, stay healthy and be successful. Those returning to the California area have the additional responsibility of being good neighbors to other students and the full-time Borough residents by following the safety and security guidelines. It will take continuous and responsible efforts from all of us to prevent the county or state from returning to the Red Phase where everything will be closed and we will have to stay in our homes.

Cal U’s Student Code of Conduct remains in effect and covers behavior on and off campusSeveral provisions can apply to events and gatherings:

1) “Endangering Behavior” that includes creating unsafe or unsanitary conditions, which could be applied depending on the size of the group and whether masking and social distancing are followed.

2) “Failure to Comply” that includes failure to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Also remember that California Borough ordinances are in effect and may be enforced, including California Borough Ordinance No. 531 prohibiting disorderly houses defined as:

Any place within the Borough where persons gather or abide and where the owner, lessee, or person in charge permits, encourages, or tends to permit or encourage drunkenness, illegal consumption of alcohol or drugs, boisterous conduct, unseemly noise, fighting or other conduct which disturbs the public peace or decorum, or promotes disorder and lessens the dignity of the community.  Said definition shall apply whether the place is public or private, a building, parking area, or any lot of land in the Borough. All such places within the Borough of California are hereby declared a public nuisance.

You are encouraged to be an example for others by making good decisions and by being aware that those who do not can be held accountable. Please direct questions or concerns to the Associate Dean for Student Conduct, Mr. Jim Pflugh at pflugh@calu.edu or call Student Affairs at 724.938.4439.
