INFLUENZA

  

  

DESCRIPTION

Influenza, commonly called “the flu,” is caused by the influenza virus, which infects the respiratory tract.

  

HOW YOU GET THE FLU

v  The flu is a contagious disease in which the influenza virus is spread through the air by the coughing and sneezing of people who are already infected.

v  The flu can also be caught by someone touching an object that another person has sneezed on, and then bringing that hand to his or her face, especially the eyes.

 

FREQUENT SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS


v  High fever  

v  Headache

v  General aches and pains

v  Exhausted

v  Dry cough

v  Sore throat

v  Sneezing

v  Runny or stuffy nose

v  Nausea

v  Vomiting

v  Diarrhea

v  Sudden onset


TREATMENTS

v  Rest

v  Eating meals as tolerated

v  Drinking plenty of fluids

 

PREVENTION

v  Annual flu vaccinations have proven very effective in preventing the disease.

v  The vaccine may decrease the severity of the disease and the risk of complications.
