IT Projects Updates

New Banner Environment:

The Banner team has been hard at work with completely rebuilding Banner from the ground up.  A major part of this initiative was moving from a Microsoft based platform to a Linux based platform.  So far the system’s performance has exceeded our expectations with almost every process showing significant speed increases.

Guest Wireless:

There is a new Guest Wireless system in place, which no longer requires coupon codes for access.  Users should see a new SSID called CALUGUEST, which has a captive portal allowing for self-registrations.  Users will need to provide a valid email address to get access for 24 hours.  Please note that anyone providing a Cal U email address will be denied access as they are not guests and should connect to CALNET.

Jabber is Here:

Cisco Jabber is a great communications tool to organize contacts, dial your phone, instant message, listen to voicemail on your PC, and launch WebEx.  Many additional features will be introduced in the coming months as we roll this feature out to the campus.

Disabled Desktop redirect script:

For several years, a login script would run that would save everything stored on a user’s desktop to their personal share.  This script was not always working and was causing slow logins for many users.  Since it was not reliable, causing issues, and since most users didn’t know that it was in place it was determined that the best course of action was to disable it.  As a result, anything now saved to the Desktop and any Internet Explorer favorites on a user’s PC will only be stored locally.  We recommend saving files to your My Documents or N drive.

Office 2013 and AV Updates:

All new computers have been deployed with Office 2013 and Endpoint Protection antivirus.  Client Services will be working throughout the semester to push Office 2013 and Endpoint protection to all faculty and staff computers.  Endpoint protection will also be available to students and Sophos will be discontinued.

Software Center:

A new desktop icon will be appearing on your computer.  UTech will be able to publish software for all end users to install if they choose.  Clicking the Software Center icon will display a list of software from which you can select and install.

Network Upgrades:

The networking team has replaced several switches and routers across campus increasing the on-campus speed between buildings to 10 GBPS.

IT Projects Coming Soon

Office 365:

In the next few weeks, UTech will be transitioning student email to Office 365.  Stay tuned for more information on this change.

VIP Upgrade:

During the fall semester, UTech will be building a new VIP portal.  The new portal will run on the LookingGlass platform and provide improved functionality and scalability.

Faculty and Staff Computer Upgrades:

UTech ordered 150 new computers designated for faculty and staff.  We are currently finalizing the list as to where these will go and will then begin coordinating the equipment swaps.
