Dear Faculty,
Cal U offered SI for 59 courses during the FA 21 and SP 22 semesters. During the FA 22 semester, we would like to add 10 or more courses. Our institution's goal is to offer 118 courses in five years, and you play a critical role in achieving this goal.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a non-remedial academic support program. SI helps students how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills to increase their performance.
SI is an active approach to learning that supports students toward academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.” SI consists of regularly scheduled, voluntary sessions outside of class, which are facilitated by trained SI leaders who utilize collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction in small groups.
SI Leader Qualifications:
SI Requirements:
1. The SI Leader will attend class each time it meets. In addition, the SI Supervisor might
also attend some class sessions with the SI Leader to help evaluate the Leader in the SI
sessions.
2. The faculty member will be asked to make grades from exams available to the SI
Supervisor as a means of determining whether or not students coming to SI are
performing at a higher level than those students not attending. Also, for evaluation
purposes, final course grades will be given to the SI Supervisor at the end of the term by
either the faculty member or the registrar.
3. The SI Leader will occasionally be given a few minutes at the beginning of class to make
announcements about the SI sessions.
4. The faculty member will not be given the names of students who attend SI sessions. This
is to preserve students’ anonymity, which is one of the cornerstones of the SI model.
5. The SI Leader and faculty member meet on a regular basis during the faculty member’s
office hours, by appointment, or at another mutually agreeable time.
6. Determine if the faculty member wants anonymous feedback from SI participants.
7. Ask the faculty to share reactions to the SI program – perhaps oral or written.
If you would like SI to support a course, please fill out the form. For more information on our program, please contact Tyton Brunner at 724-938-1599 or brunner@calu.edu.
