Junior runners Alex Zanella and Aaron Dinzeo will represent Cal U’s women’s and men’s cross country programs at the 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships on Nov. 23 in Spokane, Wash.

Cal U women’s cross country

Zanella is the first women’s cross country runner in program history to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships. She earned this distinction after finishing fourth overall with a time of 20 minutes, 56.9 seconds at the Nov. 9 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, held at Lock Haven University.

Her individual effort led Cal U to a sixth-place finish overall in the team standings, another program standard. Zanella also won the season-opening Ohio Valley Challenge.

The women’s cross country team earned the program’s first-ever national ranking (20th) earlier this season.

Cal U men’s cross country

Dinzeo finished second overall with a time of 29 minutes, 52.6 seconds at the men’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, also held at Lock Haven. He helped the Vulcan men finish sixth for the team’s best-ever regional finish.

Dinzeo earned cross country All-American honors in 2011 by finishing 20th nationally.

Nevertheless, Dinzeo also earned NCAA Division II Track and Field All-American honors in the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter run last winter and spring, respectively.
