Cal U basketball vs. IUP

Jan. 27, Convocation Center
4 p.m. – Doors open
5:30 p.m. – Women’s game
7:30 p.m. – Men’s game

Both games aired LIVE on ESPN3

Vulcan basketball fans will be wearing red Jan. 27 when ESPN3 broadcasts its NCAA Division II Basketball Game of the Week from the Cal U Convocation Center.

The Vulcans are looking for a “red out” in the stands as they entertain longtime rival IUP in a PSAC doubleheader.

Both the women’s and men’s games will be streamed nationally on the live, multi-screen ESPN3 sports network, available in 99 million homes.

Game time

Free parking will be available for fans in the River Lot (Lot 4). Admission to the Convocation Center is $1, with proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Doors to the Convocation Center open at 4 p.m., and fans can warm up for the game with music, face painting, poster making and caricatures sponsored by the Student Activities Board. Select concession items will cost just $1.

The women's game starts at 5:30 p.m., with the defending NCAA Division II national champions hoping to avenge last month’s loss to IUP.

The men's game starts at about 7:30 p.m. in another longstanding rivalry.

Both games will be carried live in their entirety on ESPN3.

About 1,000 fans will receive free T-shirts sponsored by PSECU. Other giveaways and contests include a Hot Shot contest sponsored by Campy’s during the first half of each game, and a Dairy Queen Ice Cream Scream early in each game’s second half. A "cash crawl" sponsored by the Student Association Inc. will be held during half-time of each game, and other prize drawings are planned.

The Young and Gifted Gospel Choir will sing the national anthem before the women's game, and the Cal U pep band, cheerleaders and dance team will perform during time-outs.

On the air

This marks the first time that PSAC basketball has been highlighted as ESPN3’s Game of the Week, but neither the Vulcans nor the Crimson Hawks are strangers to the national media.

In March, the CBS Sports Network broadcast the NCAA Division II national semifinals and finals, following the Cal U women’s basketball team’s rise to the national championship.

The IUP men’s team also reached the NCAA Division II national championship game in March. The Hawks fell to Florida Southern in a game that also was aired by CBS.

Combined, the four competing teams have won 26 PSAC championships and made 45 NCAA Tournament appearances over the years.
