To our students, faculty and staff,

California University of Pennsylvania takes pride in its culture of diversity and inclusiveness. Since its founding 165 years ago, California has welcomed students, faculty and staff from varied backgrounds and many walks of life. For more than 16 decades, our campus community has been united in the pursuit of learning and the belief that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Recently, in Charlottesville and elsewhere across the country, we have seen the damage done by hatred, the pain caused by bigotry and the heartbreak that results from violence. It is painful to realize that such hateful attitudes and actions remain a part of our society. But we can reject messages of hatred and work together to make California a safe and welcoming place.

How do we fulfill our University’s promise as a diverse, caring and scholarly community of learners? Guided by our core values of Civility, Integrity and Responsibility, we can insist that courtesy and respect remain a part of every conversation. We can act in accordance with our highest principles. We can take responsibility for our words and actions, recognizing their consequences for ourselves and others.

This week, as we prepare to welcome new students to our Cal U family, let us reaffirm our belief in the equal dignity of every person. Let us embrace the ideals that unite us and celebrate the diversity that makes our campus such a vibrant place to live and learn.

Together, let’s commit to growing in knowledge and understanding, so that California remains what it always has been — a place of opportunity for all.

With best wishes for a productive and rewarding academic year,

Geraldine Jones
