Family Tradition – Rachel

She always wanted to teach. And that led her to PennWest California.

Even as a kid, Rachel Wilkinson wanted to be a teacher. So she decided to follow her dream, and her family, to PennWest California’s College of Education and Human Services. “Both my grandparents got elementary education degrees from PennWest California. So did my father and sister-in-law, and they all loved the program. It was an easy choice.” Once she made the move to PennWest California, things really took off. She found herself in a classroom starting in the second semester of her first year – and she’s been gaining valuable field experience ever since. As part of her program, she’s earned an Integrative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education Endorsement from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. And she’s found clubs centered around her major that have built her confidence, her professional network and her leadership skills. Rachel’s PennWest California experience has taught her an important lesson: It’s important to build your future your way.

"It doesn’t matter what others want you to do or think will be best. Do what you love and you’ll never go to work – you’ll get paid to do something that you enjoy. "
