Cal U Women United will celebrate its fifth anniversary at 5 p.m. April 27 in the south wing of the Convocation Center.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Lisa McBride, former special assistant to the President for equal employment and educational opportunity and ombudsperson at Cal U. McBride organized Cal U Men United, which led in 2013 to the formation of Cal U Women United. Both groups support the success of men and women of color at the University.

Also, the first Darla Holley-Holmes Book Scholarship will be awarded. Holley-Holmes, who works in the Department of Art and Languages, has been the adviser for Cal U Women United since the group was formed. The $400 scholarship, to be used to purchase books, will be awarded annually to a junior or senior member of the group with at least a 2.5 grade-point average.

McBride most recently was vice president for Inclusive Excellence at Salem State University before becoming senior consultant at the London School of Business with Solid Solutions Consultant Group.

Cal U Women United's annual dinner, known as the Sankofa Ceremony — from an African word that signifies the importance of reflecting on the past in order to build a successful future — will also recognize former executive board members in attendance.

Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for alumni, faculty and staff. Reservations are due by April 20. For more information, contact Holley-Holmes at holmes@calu.edu.
