Earth Day Activities Planned

Sustainability Club events on Friday, April 20, to draw attention to environmental issues.

The Sustainability Club at Cal U is sponsoring several events on Friday, April 20, in celebration of Earth Day.

"Sustainability and Earth Day have equivalent purposes," said event organizer Daja Douglas, a first-year biology major, member of the University Honors Program, vice president of the Medical Interest Club, member of the Student Advisory Honors Board, and incoming vice president of the Sustainability Club.

"They both serve to educate on the environment and make a positive difference in the world."

Friday's schedule:

  • 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Natali Student Center: Clubs and businesses will provide information on environmental issues.
  • 10 a.m.-11 a.m., Keystone 205: Holley Lawrence, from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, will discuss the importance of recycling.
  • 3-4 p.m., Keystone 205: Sarah Martik, from the Center for Coalfield Justice, will discuss the impact of fracking on the environment.
  • 4 p.m. April 20-26, Vulcan Theatre, Natali Student Center: Screenings of Food Inc., which examines agribusiness in the United States.

In addition to these events, members of the Cal U soccer teams will be cleaning up their field from noon-1 p.m. Friday and then work at the community garden at SAI Farm from 1-2 p.m. Environmental murals will be on display in the Department of Art and Design. And Rootz Salon and Spa, on Third Street in California, Pa., will have clean air candles for sale.
