“There is only one thing worse than coming home from the lab to a sink full of dirty dishes, and that is not going to the lab at all!” – Chien-Shiung Wu

Dr. Chein-Shiung Wu, the “First Lady of Physics,” was lauded and recognized for several scientific achievements in her life including the Comstock Prize in Physics from the National Academy of Sciences, the National Medal of Science and the Wolf Prize in Physics. Born and raised in China, Wu was afforded educational opportunities at a young age, a rarity for girls and women at that time in the country. After graduating from the University of Shanghai, she moved to San Francisco, enrolled at the University of Berkeley, where she completed her Ph.D. in 1940. She was the only Chinese-American to work on the nuclear Manhattan Project in 1944 and collaborated with Lee & Yang to disprove the Law of Conservation of Parity. Wu was the first female professor and the first woman to get an honorary doctorate at Princeton. Her involvement extends to the U.S. National Academy of Science and the American Physical Society, where she served as the first woman president. Her intelligent, scientific work in physics and medicine has been recognized throughout the last half century and has paved the way for women of all backgrounds to pursue their ambitions.
