Award Spotlight

Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health

  • The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health are offered through a partnership between the Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These awards were established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings.
  • Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships carry the same benefits as the traditional Fulbright Study/Research grants to the host country. The Fogarty International Center, NIH, will provide support to the research training site and may provide orientation for the fellows at the NIH.
  • The program is designed for candidates who are currently enrolled in medical school or in a graduate-level program and who are interested in global health. The basic requirements and process for applying for the Fulbright-Fogarty Program are the same as for any Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research Grant.
  • For the 2021-2022 award cycle, Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships will be offered in the following countries: Vietnam, Nepal (sites forthcoming), Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Uganda, Jamaica, and Peru.
  • *NEW* Fogarty Webinar for Applicants and FPAs on August 19th.

 2020 - 2021 Award Cycle

  • Due to the U.S. Department of States global Level 4 Travel Advisory, ECA has delay the start date of several components of the 2020-2021 Fulbright U.S. Student Program until after January 1, 2021.
    • Revised starts dates assume that the travel warning level has been reduced by that time.
    • Award specific information, including revised start dates and grant lengths, will be communicated to finalists directly as soon as it is available.
    • The only potential exception to the delayed start date are Finalists who are enrolled in a degree program at a foreign university who may be able to begin their academic programs in person this fall in local campus and in-country conditions allow, or online. No research or ETA awards will be permitted to begin before January 2021.
    • Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board Policy currently does not allow for deferrals to subsequent academic years.
  • Delayed start dates have resulted in the cancellation or reduction in number of awards being offered in some countries. Impacted ETA Finalists and Alternates may be eligible for country reassignment.
  • 2020-2021 Finalists and Alternates (as well as non-selects) are able to apply for the 2021-2022 award cycle.
  • A Template Press Release for Individuals and Institutions is available on the FPA Resources page under "Publicity"
