Meteorology/Earth Sciences Colloquia Series

Presents Katie Mercadante

11:00 a.m. February, 24th

Eberly Hall, Room 110

California, PA- The California University of Pennsylvania’s (CalU) Meteorology Club will be hosting its second speaker of the spring semester, Katie Mercadante.

Katie Mercadante will be speaking on Tuesday, February 24th at 11:00am in the Eberly Building of Science and Technology, room 110.

Katie Mercadante is a high school science teacher at Montour High School, where she teaches astronomy and meteorology electives, and serves as faculty advisor to student council and SADD.  Additionally, she is a part-time educator with the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.  Katie is a member of the National Weather Association’s Education Committee.  Her previous research interests have included impacts of weather on voter turnout, Hurricane Katrina and topics in Special Education.  She is currently pursuing a PhD in Instructional Management at Robert Morris University, where her research interests include outcomes assessments in informal science education and leadership education.

The title of her speech is Converging Majors: Making the Most of a Diverse Background. With two degrees in education and a major and minor in the Earth Sciences, some would wonder how this could become a career.  Mercadante will discuss how a diverse academic background, research experience and taking advantage of professional opportunities as an undergrad netted a dream job and a seat in a competitive PhD program.

This presentation is open to the general public and is free of charge.  For more information contact the Colloquia Series Chair, John Troutman at TRO7075@calu.edu.
