The following communication provides information to PennWest faculty relating to the migration of existing courses shells to our new PennWest D2L Brightspace.

NOTE: Starting Summer 2022, ALL courses will be hosted via the new PennWest D2L Brightspace; access to CALU, Clarion, and Edinboro D2L Brightspace sites will end May 23rd

During the interim, you will continue to access and teach Spring 2022 courses via your existing campus D2L Brightspace.

PennWest Course Shell Preparation

Please review ALL provided materials to determine what steps you need to complete and their associated deadlines.

What Course Shells will automatically be migrated?

All instructional courses from Fall 2018 to Fall 2021 have already been migrated and the instructor of record has been assigned. Winter 2021 and Spring 2022 courses will migrate once the Spring 2022 semester ends.
If you need a copy of Winter 2021 or Spring 2022 to prepare your Summer 2022 course(s) - please utilize:

Course Copy Request Form

What Shells will NOT be automatically migrated?

Non-instructional Shells – Development/Sandbox Shells, Community Shells, Research Group Shells, Organizations, Specialty Shells. If you wish to retain a copy of a non-instructional shell, please use the provided guide:

Exporting a Brightspace Course Shell

To request a new Non-Instructional Shell within PennWest D2L Brightspace, please utilize:

Non-Instructional Course Shell Request Form

NOTE: Please plan accordingly, exports must be completed prior to May 23rd

What data is excluded from the course migration?

NO student data will be migrated. No student grades, No assignment submissions, No quiz submissions, No discussion posts.

What if I want to retain copies of any student data?

Student submitted work (assignments/discussion posts/etc.) is FERPA-protected data. If you elect to download and retain any of your student’s work, it must be secured appropriately, and files must be destroyed when no longer needed. You could be held responsible should an unauthorized data release occur.
If you wish to archive course data, please use the provided guide:

Archiving Student Data from a Brightspace Course Shell

NOTE: Please plan accordingly, this must be completed prior to May 23rd

What about Spring 2022 students requiring an incomplete?

Because access to CALU, Clarion, and Edinboro D2L sites will end May 23rd, any Spring 2022 student ‘incompletes’ that require use of D2L, must be fulfilled on the new PennWest D2L Brightspace.

To request assistance from LTS with this process – please utilize:

Incomplete Grade Assistance Request Form

PennWest Course Shell Access

Faculty access to PennWest D2L Brightspace begins March 29th via my.PennWest.edu ‘experience’ dashboard.

NOTE: Summer 2022 course assignments are still being finalized in Banner. D2L Brightspace course shells will not be visible/accessible to faculty until they’re assigned as “instructor of record” in Banner.

NOTE: All PennWest D2L Brightspace courses are now created ‘Active’ with course start and end dates populated by Banner. Students will be able to see their courses listed upon registration but will not have access to course shells until the course start date (displayed in the MyCourses widget). Student access to a course will end 14 days after the course end date when the course shell is automatically made 'Inactive'.
