Help for Haiti

Cal U is joining in the Haiti relief effort coordinated by PASSHE. President Armenti invites the entire Cal U community to join the fundraising effort and help rebuild a school destroyed by the earthquake.

"Help for Haiti: A Special Convocation" will examine problems Haiti faces as it attempts to rebuild. All members of the Cal U community may attend the panel presentation 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Feb. 11 in Steele Hall Mainstage Theatre.

Fund request OK’d

Washington County commissioners have approved $500,000 in Local Share Account funding to equip the executive conferencing center planned for the Convocation Center. The funds will outfit three conference rooms with "smart" technology.

Cal U marks Black History Month

Cal U celebrates Black History Month with many campus events and a trip to the National Afro-American Cultural Center and Museum. Campus highlights include a talk by Sapphire, whose best-selling novel Push is the basis of the hit movie Precious.

Larmi retires; Thorn steps up

After a 35-year career that blended finance and higher education, former comptroller Eric Larmi has announced his retirement, effective Jan. 29. Bob Thorn, former director of the Office of Financial Aid, will serve as interim vice president for Administration and Finance during a national search.

New Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition

Digital technology reveals the beauty of nature in Transitions: Photographs by Robert Creamer, an exhibition created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration the National Museum of Natural History. Transitions will open Dec. 18 in Manderino Gallery, on the third floor of Manderino Library at California University. The images will remain on view through April 27.

Development realigned

Reorganizing the Office of Development and Alumni Relations is intended to make the office more effective and to bring Cal U’s capital campaign “to a successful and timely conclusion,” Vice President Ron Huiatt says.

Autism conference

Register now for the annual autism conference at Cal U. The "P.E.P." event for parents, educators and professionals will be held 8 a.m.-4 p.m March 10. Speaker will be Dr. Peter Gerhardt, president and chair of the Scientific Council for the Organization for Autism Research.

Daffodil Days

Orders are due by Feb. 17 for the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days campaign. Supporters may order cut flowers, potted mini-daffodils, a vase of blooms or a Boyd’s Bear with daffodils. Order forms are available in Duda 111.

Readers relax with 'Push'

A new book group, Louie's Lit, will meet to discuss 'Push,' by Sapphire, 5 p.m. Feb. 22 in Manderino 408. The group reads for fun and meets monthly to discuss books that have been made into movies.

It’s ‘a P.R. affair’

Feb. 10 is the last day to register for “a P.R. affair,” a student-organized event set for Feb. 19 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The event is hosted by the PRactitioners, Cal U’s student-led PR firm, and the campus chapter of PRSSA, the Public Relations Student Society of America.

The Third Annual Autism Conference, “P.E.P.: The Partnership Continues,” will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, in Steele Hall on the Cal U campus. Sponsored by Cal U and Intermediate Unit 1, the conference will feature a keynote speech by Dr. Peter Gerhardt.

HANDICAPPED, VISITOR PARKING

Handicapped access parking spaces are available on the main campus. All bus service between Roadman Park and main campus is handicapped accessible. Limited parking for visitors is available in the small lot beside Kara Alumni House.

DIRECTIONS TO ROADMAN PARK

From the Cal U entrance, follow Third Street to the traffic light at Wood. Turn left; continue uphill to the stop sign. Bear left slightly to continue on California Road (Route 88). Roadman Park is on your right. For parking, use the entrance just AFTER Adamson Stadium.

BUS SERVICE BY MMVTA

Marked buses run every 10/20 minutes (peak/off-peak) from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. weekdays. One-way ride takes about 10 minutes. BUS STOPS: Roadman Park Lot, Manderino Library, Natali Student Center, corner of Third/Gallagher. After 7:20 a.m., the route TO CAMPUS ONLY adds stops at Vulcan Village and MMVTA Park-n-Ride Lot.

THIRD STREET CLOSED NEAR GALLAGHER

Third Street near Gallagher Hall is closed to traffic. To reach the River Lot, use the Hamer railroad crossing: Follow signs from Green Street to Second to Beazell, then take the Loop Road to the crossing.

RAIL CROSSING OPEN AT THIRD STREET

The Third Street railroad crossing remains OPEN, with access to Morgan Hall (and handicapped parking) through the River Lot. The sidewalk adjacent to Gallagher Hall remains OPEN to pedestrians for access to Morgan and Gallagher halls.

HAMER WAY CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION

Hamer Way is CLOSED from the Third St. intersection to the railroad crossing. The Hamer crossing to the River Lot will remain OPEN. Vehicles exiting the River Lot at the Hamer crossing must turn RIGHT. The Hamer Parking Lot is permanently closed.

EXIT RESTRICTED AT HAMER HALL

The exterior doors of Hamer Hall facing the construction site are designated as EMERGENCY EXITS ONLY. To enter and leave Hamer Hall, use doors facing Coover Hall.

RIVER LOT ADDITION OPEN

The addition to the River Lot is now OPEN, with the exception of some spaces at the far end. Lighting has been installed. The remaining spaces will be opened once the call boxes are in operation.

NO PARKING BEHIND LIBRARY
